Description

Letrozole, sold under the brand name Femara among others, is a medication primarily used to treat breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It belongs to a class of drugs known as aromatase inhibitors, which work by suppressing the production of estrogen in the body. Estrogen can promote the growth of certain types of breast cancer tumors.

The typical dosage of Letrozole for breast cancer treatment is 2.5 mg taken orally once a day, usually for a duration determined by the treating oncologist.

In addition to its use in breast cancer treatment, Letrozole is sometimes used off-label to stimulate ovulation in women with infertility issues, particularly those with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) who have not responded to other ovulation-inducing medications.

As with any medication, Letrozole can cause side effects. Common side effects may include hot flashes, joint pain, fatigue, and nausea. In some cases, Letrozole may also cause more serious side effects such as bone thinning (osteoporosis) or an increase in cholesterol levels.

If you have been prescribed Letrozole, it’s important to take it exactly as directed by your healthcare provider. Be sure to discuss any concerns or potential side effects with your doctor, and inform them of any other medications or supplements you are taking, as they may interact with Letrozole. Additionally, regular follow-up appointments with your oncologist or healthcare provider are important to monitor your response to treatment and manage any side effects.
